The Shanghai MixC store marks Blue Magpie’s first duplex. Building upon the brand’s signature naturalist aesthetic, we have integrated traditional Chinese spatial sequencing to imbue the dining area with a rich and engaging sense of order.

Scene I: The Pavilion

Situated adjacent to the mall's main entrance, the store’s double-height fa?ade serves as far more than a mere expression of the brand’s identity; it acts as a visual interface with the urban public realm, rendering it a feature of paramount importance. The design therefore seeks to strike a delicate balance: satisfying the visual demands of the urban scale while simultaneously accommodating the functional requirements of the human scale.

Three distinct functional zones—the cold kitchen, the hot kitchen preparation area, and the beverage bar—collectively occupy nearly half of the interior floor area. Had we opted for a conventional enclosed kitchen layout, the entire space would have felt severely constricted. Consequently, the design concept pivoted toward an open-kitchen configuration. This approach maximizes the utilization of spatial depth, introducing a new spatial layer and architectural plane within the interior that allows passing guests to viscerally experience the vibrant, lively atmosphere—the very "smoke and fire"—of the restaurant.

The lighting design adheres to the principle of "light without visible fixtures," cultivating an ambiance that is uniform, understated, and gentle—effectively illuminating a warm, inviting beacon within the urban landscape.
Scene II: The Tavern
Given the considerable length of the shopping mall's facade, which is frequently exposed to high wind pressure, a vestibule has been installed at the ground-floor entrance. This feature minimizes thermal exchange between the interior and exterior environments, thereby ensuring optimal indoor comfort and privacy.

The vestibule also serves as a transitional zone within the spatial sequence, offering visitors a brief moment of buffer and adjustment as they transition from the expansive scale of the urban landscape into the more intimate confines of the ground-floor interior.

The ground-floor layout features a beverage bar, counter seating, and booth seating. The space is compact and offers limited seating, thereby enhancing privacy; the setting is ideally suited for enjoying a light meal and a casual drink.
Scene III: The Hall
Ascending the winding wooden staircase leads to the second-floor area. The illuminated niches lining the staircase wall echo the orderly lighting design language established at the storefront, while also alleviating the monotony of the long, narrow passageway.

Due to spatial width constraints, the kitchen had to be situated in the interior section of the second floor. This open-plan kitchen opens out onto the dining area on three sides, creating a sense of spaciousness and layered depth, while also fostering a greater sense of interaction with the guests.
The second-floor space expands laterally; extensive glazing allows for abundant natural light, transforming this area into an open, luminous "hall"—which also serves as the primary seating zone with scenic views.

Scene IV: The Courtyard
A landscape feature comprising a wooden-framed trellis and a stone arch bridge forms a transitional zone; passing through this area leads to "The Courtyard."

Flanking the courtyard passageway are various booth seating areas, offering more private, intimate dining spaces.
Traversing "The Courtyard" brings one to the second-floor entrance of the establishment—a design element that once again echoes the layered panel aesthetic of the building's exterior facade.

Mr. Duan Yi graduated from the School of Architecture of South China University of Technology and the ENSAG School of Architecture in France with a bachelor's and master's degree. His research direction in France was sustainable architecture. After returning to China, he worked in many well-known domestic and foreign architectural firms such as AIM, CCDI, and KPF, and participated in the design and completion of many large-scale mixed-use, offices, hotels and commercial projects. In 2016, he founded YDESIGN.
Since its inception, YDESIGN has been constantly trying to explore new markets and working methods. The project types are extensive, covering various fields and dimensions such as planning, architecture, interior, product, and visual design in terms of scale, and public facilities, hospitality, office, hotel, vacation, retail, restaurants, and residence in terms of type. We oppose the trend of designing for the sake of designing, and the "landmarkization" and "Internet celebrity" trends of over-designing. We constantly seek to deeply understand the brand and operational needs, and make the design and space experience seamlessly connected from the functionality and actual brand soul, so as to achieve the "form and spirit integration" that is reasonable and unexpected.
